Hi im wondering if it is worth overclocking my i74790k to 4.6ghz? i have had to bump up the voltage alot which has bumped up the temps as well but a considerable amount. i want to know what kind of FPS gain i should expect. shall i just keep it at 4.4ghz for the cooler temps or should i carry on with my 4.6ghz overclock? prime 95 71c 1.25vcore 4.6ghz

you know , you dont need to overclock the i7 4790k much . It will not increase gaming performance much if you overclocked 200mhz more . And better would be if you keep the temperature low playing at 4.4Ghz

yea this is what im going through in my mind, i just dont know if its worth the temperature increase. I suppose i will save the overclock profile and try to do some benchmarks and see what performance loss there is. also if anyone else has any feedback that would be appreciated

I second this thought.

Favor lower temperatures, not 200Mhz. Heat kills CPUs. Its not worth it for not even an extra 5% boost in clock rate. You might loose 2-3 FPS going from 4.6Ghz to 4.4Ghz, but you could potentially gain 2-3 extra years of CPU life.

And to play devils advocate, Prime95 introduces very unrealistic CPU loads, never seen by gaming. 71C is not ridiculously high for Intel CPUs. Unless you plan on running Prime95 often, I would check your temperatures during the games you will be most often playing, and use that to judge your CPU temperature, instead of synthetic tests.
