How can I get internet in my apartment?

I recently moved into an apartment that I thought came with internet. I was mistaken.

Now I'm internet-less except by phone data and the downside to that is that I'm basically in a phone dead zone. All carriers seem to avoid this area.

I'm also not allowed to install anything, which makes getting an ISP in here difficult.

Are there any devices that act like a cable box or something that plug directly into a computer and allow me to get internet the same way I would if I were to install a cable or fiber optic box? Like, I want internet service, but I can't install bulky equipment or run lines to the apartment.

Can you be more specific? I'm not overly technical. Who provides this service and how is it received in my apartment? In other words, what equipment do I need to make it work?

EDIT: I didn't mean to end this discussion. How the hell did I do that?

Well, I'm probably located in a different country/area than you are. In our location, we just buy a small wireless device (about the size of a mouse) to be plugged in via USB to the computer. Instant Internet access.

Now, I'm not sure about your location if you have these devices and broadband providers. It may be a different setup. Here are some info about this.

These still seem to be based off of mobile data, which is unreliable in my area. I'm using it now, but if my phone loses connection, I lose internet. I'm trying to avoid that.

rgd1101, thanks. Really. Thanks. Why did you even bother replying?

And I might be able to install something if it's small and not too involved, but it seems like US providers need to install huge boxes either outside or inside the home. I can't really do that.

Hmm... well you're really in a tight spot. Wish I could provide more solutions. I don't know how US mobile data works, I mean, when you say "phone in a dead zone", that does mean ALL phone networks have no signal whatsoever? Or just a selected mobile network provider?

Reason I asked is, in our location, we got a "dead zone" in 2 mobile network providers (specific in the place) but we use a different mobile network for internet access (using that pocket wi-fi) with no problems.

How about Satellite Broadband? We don't have that here but I just came across an article, which, maybe would help your situation (but I think it would be pricey than the DSL). http://arstechnica.com/business/2013/01/satellite-internet-15mbps-no-matter-where-you-live-in-the-us/

I find it hard to believe than an entire apartment block is totally without internet ??
Can you pick up a private wireless connection anywhere??
I've known people in the past to pay a neighbour a small monthly cash payment for use of their internet connection.
rgd1101's comment may have sounded harsh but in all fairness he is right.

Pretty much. I don't get great data signal from any provider. I have phone (thank goodness), so I can make calls and text, but data is slow as hell and unreliable. I tried a mobile hotspot from my neighbor and it kept cutting in and out.

I guess it seems there's no non-mobile wireless solutions. *sigh* I'll just have to keep relying on tethering my phone and hope I have enough data.

Thank you for trying to help, though.

I don't know because of physics and logic?
Anyway, what is the landlord rule for the "small" and not too involved? satellite internet usually just the dish on the roof, then wire to inside to a modem/receiver.

Tends & tplink do 3g/HSDPA wireless routers that are mobile data based & take a sim card.
The difference with thesevreception wise compared to phone tethering is huge.
They have a fairly big external antennae & can be placed in a windows for better reception.
I got my uncle one as his mobile dongle was sketchy at 2-3mbs with intermittent connections.
With one of these in the window he's now pulling 16-20mbs & has a solid connection.

Something easily removable when I do move out.

It's not an apartment block. It's an apartment on their property, outside their house. Just one person - me.

I'll look into those routers. Thank you.
