Good mid-range graphics card for computer animation student

My son is a new freshman at college and is studying computer animation from the storyboarding side of graphics.

I am purchasing the following system for him:

AMD-FX-8320e-3-5GHz-Turbo-8-Core-Desktop-PC-8GB-DDR3-1-TB-HDD-HDMI-Win-8-1-Pro

In addition to upgrading him to 16GB RAM I am looking to get him a graphics card. Any suggestions for a decent mid-range card? I recognize that the machine will be used for gaming as well as studies! lol
