I've read various opinions on this but none that exactly settle it for me... If I can get a combo AMD FX-4350 Vishera Quadcore and an EVGA GeForce GT 740 for roughly the same price as an Intel Core-i5 4590 (w. Intel HD 4600 graphics), which would be better? This will be for an all-purpose home computer not often used for gaming but which the owner would nonetheless like to have decent graphics and modest gaming capability (for visitors' use).

For all purpose home use, I think a I3 of some sort is optimum.
Two very fast threads plus two slower threads.
And... for a all purpose home pc, my critical component would be a ssd for windows and a few apps.

If you want, you can try out intel integrated graphics first, and later buy a discrete card if you really need one for fast action gaming.

Oh, so the two cores in an i3 hyperthread into twice as many virtual cores now? Guess I'm a bit behind on things! The only other build I've ever done was 4 yrs ago and at the time I thought only i5's and i7's used hyperthreading.

The SSD will definitely be in - I put one in that other build and never regretted it.

Thanks for your input!
