I want to get into gaming but I'm on a budget :/

I don't mind playing some games on medium settings
I Might lower things to 720p, MIGHT but not on FPS games
40-60 fps is a priority

The games I will be playing are:
Herbal Space Program
Battlefield 3
Battlefield 4
War thunder
CS:GO
COD Black Ops 3
COD MW2
Skyrim

What would suit my needs better? a i3-4170 w/ 750 ti or a FX-6300 w/750 ti? No, I will not be overclocking the FX-6300 Anytime SOON Since I will need a better PSU and an Aftermarket cooler.

Solution
I would look at the i3+750 ti as well. The Amd isn't that much worse, but minimum fps can be lower from what i've seen, also is it a dead end,the i3 can be upgraded later on for a really better cpu.

Honestly I can't recommend either of those for gaming because you will regret the purchase when all games start needing at least 4 pretty strong cores to play smoothly.

With what I said earlier, the i3 is hyperthreaded so it is detected as a 4 core but compared to 2 more real cores on say an i5 it pales in comparison.

The 6300 has the cores, but the cores are significantly weaker than those that intel has and without a pretty hefty overclock, the 6300 suffers in most modern titles.

All that said, I would *highly* recommend you to save up another ~$40 and pick up an i5, but if you must pick between those two I would have to say go with the i3 because you are not overclocking. Hope I helped.

Go for the i3 setup. The 6300 is almost "Very" old now, and single core performance is much worse than the i3. Also the socket used by the i3 leaves vast scope of future upgrades.
