I keep seeing varying watt recommendations regarding the 390 and I was pretty positive i was going to get the 550w G2 from evga but i see the 750w selling for cheaper at the moment. would i be able to make this big of a jump without undervolting? will be usuing an i7 4790k

If the model you're talking about is the B2 or G2 then it's fine to use. You'll have a bit of headroom to OC the card or GPU at will. No worries about the wattage. The system will only draw what it needs and you'll still be in the sweet spot for good efficiency.

using overpowered psu-s is quite ok and recommended even. the max efficiency for any psu is around 40-70% of its max load. the 550 you first picked is really close to the max with a 390 oc'ed so the 750 is a much better choice. like archaic said make sure it's b2 and not b1 (b1 is older and made by another oem - fsp - it's not bad, just not as great), the b2 is a great psu made by superflower.
