I'd suggest you to go to Disk Management and check how the external HDD is recognized there ( http://pcsupport.about.com/od/windows-8/a/disk-management-windows-8.htm ) Another thing you should do is test the drive's health and S.M.A.R.T. status by running a diagnostic tool on it. You should check your HDD manufacturer's website for such a tool.
