New rig shuts down after a couple of seconds no cpu fan

Just put together this pc and everyting except the videocard is new. Both the big connector and the 8 pin cpu connector are hooked up and i already took out the RAM and the videocard. The machine seems to be starting alright, except the case fan and CPU cooler are working for a split second and then stop. After a couple of seconds it shuts down completely and starts over. It doesn't POST.

Yeah, even when troubleshooting you need to leave 1 stick of RAM installed in most scenarios. Probably goes without saying but you have the CPU inserted into the socket correctly right? Nothing like dust or thermal paste on the underside of the CPU or socket?
