Before I upgraded to Windows 10, my computer running Windows 8.1 was outputting 5.1 audio to my receiver from my motherboard's on-board optical audio slot. Games and movies had perfectly functioning surround sound. My receiver automatically switched to Dolby mode when playing anything from my computer. Yes, surround sound in all games was working.
Upgrading to Windows 10 broke that feature and it's been a well known issue for several months.
Not content in waiting for Microsoft to put out a fix, I tried two different sound cards, Asus Xonar DG & Diamond Xtreme Sound 7.1, and neither was able to output anything more than stereo through S/PDIF.
Is there anyway to get surround sound again through S/PDIF? Unfortunately I can't revert to Windows 8 since I foolishly only made an image file through the Windows backup tool, which I can't restore, but that's a different topic.
