Currently I'm running 1 GTX 780. I have a second 780 of the exact same model that's been sitting around that I just now decided to take to a repair shop that did a reflow job on it. Basically I ended up improperly installing an aftermarket cooler and I think I overheated the card while doing stress testing. Because my computer crashed during stress testing and upon reboot there were permanent screen artifacting to the point where you can't read anything on the screen.

I installed the GPU into a different PC to make sure it was the card that was the issue, and yes. Screen artifacting. So I installed my second 780 and I have been running on a single card ever since then. I just got a reflow job done on the old card that has been collecting dust and the repair guy didn't tell me much. just told me to return to him if I still experience artifacts on screen.

So what should I do from here? just take out my current 780 and try running the recently reflowed card by itself? if I successfully boot without issues should I try stress testing or benchmarking it? And if it still has no issues should I try installing both cards in SLI configuration? I would love your guys advice. I'll add some specifics about my system to help you guys out.

OS: Windows 7 Home Premium
MOBO: Asus Maximus VI Hero
PSU: Corsair AX860 ATX 80 plus Platinum certified fully modular
CPU: i7 4770k water cooled w/ full custom loop
Memory: 16GB trident x RAM (2x 8gb)
both GPU's are air cooled Asus GTX 780 DC2OC edition

well you have no other way to test it

i would think its unlikely to damage other components but cant say that 100%

but think the most likely thing that could go wrong will be either it wont display at all--since they didn test it

or you will either still have artifacts immediately or at a later point

or it may all work fine
Did they perform any kind of test on the card in a PC after the reflow repair? What kind of shop is it, a general PC repair shop, or an electronics repair shop of some sort? I work in the electronics assembly field, and see PCB's being "repaired/reflowed" pretty much daily. To reflow it, they most likely had to use a liquid flux on the GPU and RAM ICs, which would need to cleaned properly, ect. after the repair. Was it checked in an X-ray machine after the repair, to verify there isn't solder bridges from the reflow? If it wasn't done correctly, and not tested, it could end up badly when you power it up in your PC.

as above where did you get it done and did you get any written guarantee for the work they carried out?

basically your only means of testing it is to put it in as the only card and give it a really good test for a few hours

even if it passes that it still doesnt mean the next day/week/month it might not play up again

hence i would want a written guarantee for the work done

It seems like a basic computer repair shop to me, http://www.recycletechs.com/ but when I called them and asked if they repair single compnents (my GPU in this case) He said he could definitely take a look at it, and that he had done a few reflow jobs in his time. After I picked it back up, he said that he currently didn't have a power supply that is powerful enough to run the card to test it. So I'm assuming no testing was done, I don't know any other specifics about what he did. What move should I make next?

There was no written gaurentee. It basically dropped it off, he said come back in 2 hours, then I handed him 20$. Told me to come back if I have issues

Agreed. I guess I'll just have to test it out. Appreciate the help. I'm going to leave this un-answered for a bit and see if I can get any other opinions

Thanks. I'd really like to try and get these running in SLI config ~ or I might consider selling and upgrading to a more powerful single card

I ended up testing the *repaired* card by itself. Did about an hour of benchmarking/stress testing ~ Then I hopped on some games for a few hours. No screen artifacts or issues relating to the ones I was having before I got the reflow done on the card. Temperatures seemed normal. Highest temp recorded via HWMonitor was 63C after playing H1Z1 on high settings for 3 hours, and watching streams on my other monitor. Clearly I haven't given it enough time to call it safe, but I'm going to go ahead and throw in my other card and test some things out with SLI. Thanks to mcnumpty23 for the help: as well as 1LiquidPC for his input.
