New SSD VS Surround sound headphones

Hello,

I have recently been looking into getting a new set of surround sound headphones along with a sound card (to eliminate noise coming from my motherboard) when i had the thought of getting an SSD. I only have enough money to get one, so my question is:

How reliable are SSD's and do i get what i pay for?

I know that SSD's are fast but i would need to spend a lot of money if i want to get one big enough so i could copy over the data on my hard drive to the SSD. Where as, i could spend about $20 more and get a razer Tiamat 7.1 full surround sound headset and a sound card.

Just looking for any ideas/thoughts on the two products. Any help will be greatly appreciated!

Cheers

SSD's decrease boot times and load times, Read and Write faster (making/copying large files faster), Last longer, use less power, don't fragmentate and are less prone to failure. All I use in my system is a 240 GB ssd that works well. I really enjoy it over my older build with harddrives. On the other hand Headphones are a nice aesthetic to have, but not all games utilize surround sound. A sound card isnt always necessary, but if you really want sound that you cant hear any electrical interference, I would recommend a DAC.

If you tell me your motherboard and data storage+futurestorage, we could determine what you need, and how to get there.

How much data are you using out of 1TB?

Your Motherboard looks like it would have surround sound support, but since it doesn't really have a specialization in audio you probably would benefit from a sound card or a DAC.

Also, What are you looking at as product for both of the options?

Currently with my steam folder installed i have used 673 GB however if i move my steam folder to an external hard drive i only have used 272 GB

The headphones i was looking at the were the Razer Tiamat 7.1 with an ASUS Xonar DSX 7.1 Channel Sound Card. As for the SSD i was thinking about a Samsung 850 EVO or PRO

With your budget, I would buy a good 512GB SSD and keep your hard drive. Then, I would setup a raid with the storage devices, or we could go the other route. What product were you looking at for the surround headphones and sound card.

What exactly do you mean by pairing it with my existing hard drive? Sounds dumb but im still kinda new to this stuff. Are you saying use the SSD as the system drive and the Hard drive for everything else?

Mostly, yes.
OS and applications on the SSD. Maybe a couple of games.
Everything else on the HDD.

That is a very common configuration.

Ok, so once ive transferred the data from the HDD to the SSD, do i then have to wipe the HDD clean to use it as a secondary drive?

If you're PC is silent, you have great hearing and there is basically no noise in your room, Buy a sound card if you choose to go that route.

The question to answer is: How effective are the headphones, and do I really want them over a SSD with several perks over a harddrive

Well, it's a teeny bit more complicated than that...but we can go into the details if you want.

With the 2 drives, you have to settup a Raid Array or you could make your older drive into an external drive with like a $30 kit. Raid Arrays can take several hours on larger builds, but if you're more experienced you can get it done in less than an hour. You will probably have to make a new thread when you come to making a RAID array, so if you want to use both drives a 512 gb ssd is suitable, if not you would be spending $300 on a TB of SSD storage and you can avoid the complications making the SSD your only drive.

So....having maybe chosen to go down the SSD route instead of sound card + headphones.
And with a ~$200 budget

Let's explore:
What drives are in your system now? Size and type?
How much total used space is on your "C" drive?
What do you use the thing for?
How 'old' is the current install? When did you last install that OS? Having any issues with it?

His Drive is 1TB HDD 7200rpm Seagate
He uses about 650 GB
He uses it for Gaming
Probably a year and a half based on speculation or maybe he installed win 10 this summer

So my current HDD is a 1TB Seagate 3.5" 7200rpm. My total used space on my C drive is 673 GB HOWEVER if i temporarily move my steam folder to an external hard drive and count only my system files, its only around 272 GB. I mainly use it for Gaming however i also use it for school work. The system was built in January this year.

Yes, I gathered most of that from a compendium of the previous comments.
I just wanted them all in one place, from the OP.

In AUD a 512 GB SSD is about $250-$300 so you would be able to buy it, but not a TB so you can easily use your external as a storage for games you don't play often

If everything else is copacetic, a 250 or 500GB SSD will fit into that.
