I have an i5 4440 gig. my Sapphire r9 280x graphics got fried recently and am looking for a replacement. mainly for playing games like witcher 3 and GTA V. plz suggest a good graphics card for playing these games at 1080p and ultra settings. I would like to achieve 50-60 fps.

I was thinking of the gtx 970(980 is out if my budget), though i am concerned over the 3.5+.5 Vram. the games i mentioned above and any good title that are coming would use 4gb ram easily. Which would severely cramp this gpu. plz help me with this predicament.

If you are concerned about the 970's VRAM, then the R9 390 is a great choice. The 8GB VRAM is kinda overkill for 1080p games right now (mine only uses 3.8 GB in GTA 5), but hey, that's what people were saying about 4GB cards just a year or two ago... My R9 390 never drops below 60fps in GTA 5 at max settings (nvm it's full 8x MSAA) except for when my i3 bottlenecks it in certain spots of the map.

I wouldn't recommend anything over a 970/390 for 1080p 60Hz currently.

Games cannot see or use more than 3.5 on the 970, that's a myth. It got tested manually and verified by NVIDIA, that's it. Gamers don't run into that problem. Personally I would get another 280x, still a good card, or if you can, a 290. If your PSU can handle it, always link full PSU specs when asking people to recommend a graphics card:

Video Card: PowerColor Radeon R9 290 4GB TurboDuo Video Card ($242.98 @ Newegg)

Video Card: Gigabyte Radeon R9 390 8GB Video Card ($273.98 @ Newegg)
Total: $273.98

Video Card: Asus GeForce GTX 970 4GB Video Card ($304.99 @ SuperBiiz)
Total: $304.99

Clearly, the 290/390 is better value, so I would go with that. It's basically equal to the 970, and the 290 also has a 8 GB version:

Video Card: XFX Radeon R9 290X 8GB Double Dissipation Video Card ($354.98 @ Newegg)
Total: $354.98

All the best!

oh look we tested our OWN card and found out that it's great , don't worry about what the community says about it , trust us
I mean how can we say something wrong about OUR card ?

that being said the 390 with 8 GB ram or the 290x with 8 GB ram seems the best card for you .
notice the 300 series cards have much better cooling than the 200 cards so they will have better performance (no thermal throttle)

Gigabyte 300 cards are voltage locked , so if you plan to water OC it or have regular air OC you won't be able to push it much

I have a Corsair GS600 psu. Bye the way, i live in india and amd cards are very expensive here. R9 390 costs about 33500rs (500+ usd). I dont wanna spend that much i was thinking between 27k and 30k(usd 400 - 450)

Most AMD cards won't go over 1150-1200MHz regardless of the voltage anyways.

Also for some reason I can't quote your post newboy, but if the GTX 970 is that much cheaper in India, then go with that. The GTX 970 is still a great card, the 3.5GB isn't the huge issue that people say it is.

970 or maybe 380 is the lowest i would go for at 1080p with good frames per second.
i really wouldn't recommend anything with 4GB VRAM or less. a lot of people seem very happy with their 970s but others claim bad stuttering passed the 3GB memory usage.
390X or 980ti is what i would personally shoot for but that appears to be out of your range.

my 8GB 290X will play anything with highest settings, 60fps at 1080p. very minor changes in settings like AA at 2x(maybe off if image impact isn't bad) and 1440p at 60fps.

avoid PNY cards but the manufacturer doesn't have a lot to do with it in most cases. if it has a good backplate, 2 or more fans, and a good default clock speed is all that should matter. just check user reviews on multiple sites for any in particular that you choose.

I liked the MSI GTX 970 4G Gaming card. That's the one that I'd recommend for 1080p @ 60 Hz. Question: When you state that your last card is fried, what exactly do you mean by that? I just want to be sure that the cause of the problem isn't still present in your system.

The card doesn't give out HDMI Display. But the most frighting thing is that when i realised Sapphire does not say anything about warranty information. anywhere. Not on the card nor on their website. Thank God the online seller refunded my money.

Understood. As for your VRAM concerns, Witcher 3 is insanely efficient with VRAM usage, so there is definitely no concern there. I don't think that it'll be an issue now with GTA 5 either. As for the future, no one can guess. But it's a fantastic card and I enjoyed it greatly.
