G'day all,

Doing a look around for a mate of mine and looking to see if anyone has an opinion on a decent but cheap AM3+ board that can take an 8320/8350 etc.

I have been looking at Gigabyte boards as that is what I am use to etc, have seen some cheap Asrock boards, but personally I know little about them.

We are trying to get him set up on a budget is ultimately what I am saying, he is keen to play the likes of Cities Skylines etc. His current board is a Gigabyte - ga-ma770t-ud3p REV 1, with a X2 550 on it, the board I believe, CPU wise will take up to an X6 1100T - but those things are hell expensive to get ones hands on.

He is picking up a cheap GPU today, nabbed a GTX 660 for $80 - I know, there will be some that might say why did he not go for something else, but I told him, and personally feel that it will serve the purpose, will just require a new PSU.

So if one were to stick with the current board, would it be best to get the highest X4 CPU the board can take which is a X4 980 or can someone recommend a cheap AM3+ option that will allow newer CPU/RAM options.

Thanks all :)

I would avoid any of them cheaper boards if you plan on using an FX 8core CPU, the overheating issues are from poor the VRM circuitry on that board.
If you don't plan on doing and overclocking you can get away with using this board:

I wouldn't really use anything cheaper then that for an FX 8core CPU.

Well, my mates budget ha. Australian $. Is really hard to say, I will assume $80-$100 for mobo. I know, I know, that is difficult for a decent AM3+ board. But am trying to get him setup on a tight budget.

Thanks for the reply, Shady.

Seems that board in Australia goes for $125.

Local store has an AsRock board:

For $79. But I know little about those boards and the one review on it says it crashed due to overheating.

I like the look of that GA-970 if I could get it for the USD price.
