Should I buy a graphics card now or wait?

I am planning on buying a 970 but someone told me I should wait till mid october as it will get cheaper then. Is that true? Should I wait or should I just go ahead and buy it when I find a good deal?

Only thing I can think of is holiday sales? I want to buy a new 1TB SSD for my system. But I'm waiting for the black friday/cyber monday sales. I might buy if I see a good unit for a price I like right now. (Considering what I've got planned coming up, I get the feeling the SSD is being moved to the back burner for another year.)

I was thinking that maybe new cards will be announced and these old ones will go down in price? But I am not sure when new cards are usually announced by NVIDIA or AMD and whether that will make the price of these old cards go down?

They've already released the new cards. Nvidia has been rolling out the 9xx series for awhile now. I think the high end is already out, though they could using something between the 960 and the 970. They just released the 950. AMDs newest cards have come out in the high end. They have yet to cut Fury down to lower levels however. We might see more cards from AMD, but I don't think anything new is coming until H1 2016 at the earliest. I'm also guessing late H1. Though to be honest I haven't paid attention to any rumors about this.

Thanksgiving isn't far away.
you should definitely wait!
I am waiting with my new build for the weeks around TG.
the savings are insane, even on quality components.

As others have suggested I would wait and see if there are any good deals come black friday / cyber monday. Poking around online suggests that a new chip from NVIDIA could be coming out soon, but this is just speculation. Things to keep in mind are that the 9xx series has been out for a while and so we are likely nearing the end of this generation's cycle and moving into the next. If it were me I would wait at least to see if there are any good deals around the holidays or even game bundles. If nothing compelling comes up I would just hang on for the new chip and see what that will do to the prices.

None of this is certain, just speculation on my part, but I wouldn't be surprised if we see something new from NVIDIA here in a short while.

Something to keep in mind is the micro stuttering being reported by users with the 970 due to the way the RAM is sectioned out. It seems to be a mixed bag on people reporting atrocious micro stuttering, and people not really noticing it at all. Something to keep in mind though when looking at the 970.

Hope this helps!

EDIT: Check this link out. Again just speculation but might help you out. http://wccftech.com/nvidia-pascal-gpu-17-billion-transistors-32-gb-hbm2-vram-arrives-in-2016/

The problem with this is something many have mentioned before. Wait for the new series from Nvidia, and the new cards from AMD won't be much farther away. And then we spend all our time waiting. As you mentioned, waiting for BF/CM is a good idea. It's only a few weeks away and it's very likely to have good deals. I wouldn't wait for next series because then you are waiting for the next series forever.

Hey that is a really good point. At some point you are absolutely right you will just end up in the perpetual waiting cycle. However waiting for the next generation of GPUs is not terribly far off and the wait will be outweighed by the, albeit theoretical at this point, performance gains. I guess it comes down to personal preference, and what you hope to achieve with this system. When I get the itch to buy something it is hard to wait and I want it now so I understand the dilemma. When you look at what the new Pascal architecture is offering though it is hard to pass up, and buying now will only mean you are going to be "outdated" in a few months. Again, it is all personal preference and if a sick deal comes along for the 970 then hey... why not right?
