I'm currently running a Pentium g3258 stock clocked with 4gb ram, I have a Antec Neo HE500 modular power supply, I plan on getting a i5 4460 and r9 280x or gtx 970, would my power supply be enough, its 500watts by the way

Its an old unit with only 80+ certification (even not a Bronze) and the strongest part is the 3.3V line. And your friend have used it for years, maybe under stress and with decreased quality of components, so no one knows how long it will live from today on. I would just not skimp on the probably most important part in your rig and buy a new and appropiate quality product, which will serve you well for long time without decreasing lifetime of all other parts in your rig. Here a recommendation

I know, the price tag of $ 70 looks much, but you get a very good product. The power it produces is much cleaner and doesn't harm your components over time like a cheap build one. If money is a real issue, I still would buy a new psu. Here is an alternative recommendation for less money, but only if money is a real issu. Normally I wouldn't buy these cheaper build units
