My boyfriend and I dont pay internet here at our house but when we get an xfinitywifi signal that is strong enough, we will log into it using my stepdads login info...the signal has never been a strong/reliable connection. A couple weeks ago, my uncle brought over a comcast xfinity router that he randomly found and plugged it in thinking it would boost the xfinitywifi signal, which it did and we enjoyed a strong fast connection....for a couple weeks.....now the xfinity signal is back to its original old self and we are having a horrible time connecting to it. Heres the thing though, my laptop keeps automatically connecting to the router that my uncle found and its letting me online... I dont pay an interent service provider so how is this possible?

Are you sure you're connected to the router? You might still be connecting to the wifi spot. I would say maybe the previous owner never canceled or is in the process of canceling their service and maybe you just got lucky, but xfinity associates a router with an account so that's probably not it.

Did you plug the router you found into the cable TV network? It's possible that it's still attached to someone else's account. Comcast doesn't know accurately where a particular piece of gear is, so they'll generally work anywhere roughly in the right neighbourhood.

It's likely that whoever previously had the router is getting charged for your usage.
