Hi, I hope I'm writing this in the right section. I have been here many times before but this is the first time I've made an account.

So I built my first pc about a week ago on Asus' Z87 Pro motherboard, and it comes with built in wifi, a feature i love. The problem is my computer is behind my desk, 1 floor and many walls away from the router; I can barely if ever get 5ghz connected, and 2.4ghz works but the connection is mediocre. i was wondering if theres any way i can get an extension or longer antenna than the one that comes with the board? this one has a very short cable meant for attaching to the case and it just isnt long enough for my purpose... can i just buy a generic dualband wifi antenna?

Any help is appreciated :wahoo:

The above type hi-gain antenna surely does make a difference - i have compared signal strength/quality of the standard antenna vs Hi-Gain with a PCIe WiFi card i have in another desktop, helps a lot if you really want to stick to rear port antenna

Ethernet doesn't mean you have to run a cable from PC to Router - you can get Powerline Ethernet Adapters which i also use occasionally when using my laptop for high bandwidth tasks, also for all smart TV's and PS4

Out of all options, i personally favour usb wifi - have this for most of my desktops, device stands on top of tower, still out of sight...
Have not come across cabled extensions for those antenna's but you can get "Hi-Gain" versions for a signal boost - https://www.asus.com/us/Networking/WLANT157/

Though one popular issue with built in wifi is the antenna's at rear of case picking up interference from the host of other cables usually tucked behind PC's, which may be the culprit reducing signal strength.
Built-in may be tidier but this issue leaves many preferring usb wifi over built-in at rear of case. Have had the same problem with PCIe wifi.

So what do you think is the best option for good reception? for my pusposes running an ethernet cable is a last resort...

Would recommend usb for best wifi signal but if you really want to stick with mobo antenna, get a Hi-Gain antenna

Thank you very much for your help, I really appreciate it. I'm not loyal to the mobo antenna, but for now I'll try the high gain. Useful even if it doesn't help this particular computer.. I'll definitely look into PowerLine Ethernet if the antenna doesn't solve the issue.
