How much Ram do I need?

4gb is usually fine, but as RAM is getting cheaper, you could get 8gb of it which is plenty. I do a lot of school work and loads of gaming on my PC, and never seen it above 80% when I've been maxing it out.
Dual channel memory is always better (2x4gb Stick or 2 x 2gb stick). Here is some pretty good RAM:

8GB is "usually" enough, but you'll need to look at what the special programs you will need for school require/recommend in the amount of RAM.
STRONGLY recommend that if you go with 8GB, you get 2 x 4GB modules, leaving you the option of later upgrading to 16GB (4 x 4GB modules)
