Random freeze with solid colour on screen --> GPU?

Hi guys,

I've had this problem a ever since I got my desktop, asked for help on several forums.

But today I was hoping to get a response from the people of tom'shardware.

What it comes down to is that my system keeps freezing to a random colour.
It used to be both of my monitors that where hooked to my GPU.
But since I connected my 2nd monitor to my Mobo, only the one connected to my GPU gets the solid colour freeze, still my whole system locks up.
And I have to do a hard reset.

So my question is: does this point towards my GPU causing the system to fail?

I'm soooo sick of this, and if you guys think it could be my GPU I'm buying a new one.

It is so hard to pinpoint what is causing the system to freeze, and I was hoping that this would prove the GPU beeing the faulty unit.

Hope to hear from you guys!

That's a really stong indication that your GPU is indeed failing. It might help if you post your other specs to see if any other potential problems exist, like your PSU. Also, does this only happen when playing games or videos, or during regular desktop usage? Do you see any blue screen errors or other events in Event Viewer? Are you able to keep using the 2nd monitor when the other other one locks up?

Here are my specs again:

-Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-4790 CPU @ 3.60GHz
-GIGA-BYTE GA-Z97-D3H
-GIGA-BYTE GeForce GTX 780 (954 mhz, 3072 mb, DDR5, 6008 mhz, 384 bit, 11, fan)
-CRUCIAL Ballistix Tactical (16384 mb, 1600 mhz, CL8, 1.5 v, non-ecc, unbuffered, kit of 2)
-SEAGATE Barracuda 2T HDD
-SAMSUNG 840 series Evo (250 gb, sata/600, 540 mbps, 520 mbps)
-Windows 10 Home premium 64bit.
-CORSAIR RM (750 watt, atx, sli ready, modular) (CP-9020055-EU)

I initially had both monitors hooked up to my gpu, but because I wanted to put less strain on my GPU I connected my 2nd monitor to my mobo and that resulted in that monitor keeping the picture displayed.
And the one on the GPU getting the random colour on freeze.

It doesn't only happen when playing games, but playing certain games will trigger it faster.
Diablo3 I have played for days not causing a single crash.
Arma3 almost causes the setup to freeze every time I play, sometimes after 1 hour, sometimes after several.

It is really hard to reproduce the error, as running 3dmark and other tests work fine.

I don't get any bluescreen errors, the setup just freezes and I have to do a hard reset.

The second monitor keeps the picture displayed, but as the system is locked up it doesn't respond to anything.

The eventlog shows acritical error: Kernel power 41 event, but I guess that is me doing a hard reset?

I did get an error display today, but this is rare. As the system unlocked for an moment. alowing me to capture this.

Yeah, I've tried that several times. With the DDU program.
After upgrading to windows 10 it was stable for a while, but now it has returned.

I know the company I bought the desktop from, didn't have the GPU in stock.
And it took a while for them to get it.

So that was a bit shady to start with imo.

But thanks for your view on this problem!
I guess the thing I could do, is try and swap my GPU with that of my brother.
And see if his or mine system crashes.

If mine crashes it must be the motherboard slot,
if his crashes its the GPU right?

Basically true, yes. But if yours crashes it could also be other components in your system causing problems. GPU, motherboard or PSU are the usual suspects. If his crashes with your GPU in it, then yes, it's got to be your GPU or PSU. If his PSU is stronger/better than yours, it could be that yours is insufficient/defective.

Make sure you do a driver cleanup on both systems before you try swapping with your brother.

I have absolutely no problem running my onboard Intel HD 4000 along side my Gtx 670.

Yeah I had the crashes even when they where both connected to my GPU. I just hope I can narrow the problem down . Not knowing what f#cks up your system is frustrating.
