I plan on a 6600k system w/ r9 390, according to pcpartpicker and eXtreme Power Supply Calculator I only need around 490W with the ssd, hdd, cooler, etc. I assume a 550W would be enough for that type of build, but every time I read forums everyone seems to shout out "750W in case you SLI/crossfire!". I feel this is unnecessary, if I don't do sli/crossfire now, then in the future I will most likely get a brand new card rather than try and find the match to my current gpu. Example: I would rather have a new 970 than try to sli an old gtx 770 and be stuck still w/ 2gb vram for basically the same price at the moment. (granted 390 has 8gb vram, but could be other tech/spec in the future that might be nicer)

Is there something I am missing? Why the push to overpower the psu? Also, this may be a noob question but is more voltage required for overclocked cpu, should I get a 650W for additional overclock headroom?

Yes 550w would be fine as long as you buy a quality power supply(even with overclocking most likely). Yes more voltage is needed for overclocking. If you plan to do a decent amount of overclocking then moving to a 650w PSU wouldn't be a bad idea since its hard to guess power draw especially if you get a really nice overclocking CPU. Just stick with reputable brands like Seasonic etc.
