Hi all I'm trying to figure out what would be the best card for the money to buy for 1440p I'm thinking the amd r9 fury primarily I know there is the gtx 980ti but for the extra price I don't really see a big performance increase. Please help some input anyone if you can.

Solution
The latest charts from TechPowerUp. Moving down to a 1080 resolution will slightly switch the numbers more in favor of the Nvidia Maxwell cards.

The best card for 1440p is, beyond doubt, the 3dfx Voodoo2 -- it can easily render smoothly with all settings ramped up to ultra high detail (okay, this was a joke).

Okay, now to be serious. If you're concerned with the price, I'd go with the AMD R9 Fury. It edges out over the Nvidia GTX 980 in some areas, though in other areas the GTX 980 edges over the AMD R9 Fury. If budget is of no relevance, then, the Nvidia GTX 980Ti wins hands down. You might want to do some comparisons yourself at gpuboss.com.

LOL the voodoo2. Realistically your probably talking 640 x 480 resolution. :p

As a joke, I'm sure it can render even 640K resolution (not to be confused with the inferior 640x480) with 128x AA. It can even perform quantum computations in real-time without worrying about Schrodinger's cat. But, yeah, it had a lot of problems at 1024x768 at 16-bit color. *Sigh*, those were the good ol' days.

Well thank you guys for your input but may I ask another question of the two of you? Is 1440p a worth while upgrade? I've thought about it on and off and I don't really care much for 4k I personally think it is to demanding of the system. So I won't be making a mistake if I want to save some money and with a fury right?

1440p is a noticible improvement if you are sitting close enough to the screen or if you use bigger screen sizes, honestly some people claim massive improvements, others claim small to not noticible, I think it comes down to each individual person in the end.

I think It would be recommended to try and find someone so you can test the difference before you buy it, but that's just my opinion.

Yes staying at 1440P will be much easier on hardware, all the GPUs of today can't really handle 4k very well besides SLI/CFX configurations. While 1440P is more expensive than 4k right now (no joke, 4k monitors are cheaper than 2k now). You pay way more in GPUs to make 4k worth while.

Fury is still a great card, if you want to save some money then go for that one instead!

Heh, back when CRTs ruled the day. Games didn't have AA either lol.

I've done a little more research kinda and I was thinking about a 21:9 monitor and I mean a 1080p one. Would that be a good idea? I was looking at the benq one so in the 34 inch arena what do you guys think of it? I know the pixel density won't be huge but would it be that noticeable in game?

If you do that, the 34 inch is $500 for 2560 x 1080P, the 1440P 34" at 3440 x 1440 even without G sync is a big difference, like going from regular 1080P to regular 1440p and I think maybe $649 is the lowest I've seen but would be well worth the extra $150.

EDIT: Then cause you're at $649 you need to also take into consideration the Gsync acer predator and asus rog swift are available for another 100 and 144hz with G sync may entice you but they're only 27". Depends if the size is better for you, personally I love the 34" size, it's considerably bigger and with 3440x1440 it's a beautiful monitor even though it's not gsync and 144hz.

Then you have freesync monitors and they're considerably cheaper but you'd need to pair it with amd card so if you go furyx then you'll probably be able to get a nicer monitor with freesync but the difference between g sync and freesync should also be taken into account. Honestly, I don't know which ones better or if either really is. There are some things about freesync though with min frame rates but not sure if it will affect you or not, it may only affect lesser cards more.

That's the monitor I'm waiting for but not the freesync one that's out right now, they're making a G sync version of it with a refresh rate of 100hz vs 75 hz that the freesync has. That's gonna be a bad azz monitor, it should be out soon, this month or next maybe. I don't have the 21:9 yet, I just sold my 27" 1440P and just waiting for this one. It's gonna be expensive but I don't plan on replacing till volta in 2018 so it will be worth it.

3440x1440p performance and fps is closer to 4K than regular 1440p and one 980 ti or furyx will run it fine but gtav and witcher 3 will still be pushed. I'm going to sli mine if I need too with later games but stay at ultrawide 1440P for now instead of 4K.

Everyone I've talked too that has the 34" loves it compared to 27", even the non g sync ones.
