I have a Dell Optiplex 780 that won't boot. When I try to boot it up, a flashing amber light blinks over and over along with lights 1 and 3 turned on and it will display nothing on my monitors. I also unplugged all external devices and I had no luck, same thing. When I opened it up to see what was happening, no activity except for a solid amber light next to the motherboard. I looked it up and saw on most of the posts people were saying it was a PSU problem, and that once they replaced the PSU it worked like a charm. I am wondering if I should go out and get a PSU to see if that helps it, or wait for support to figure it out for me since I still have my PC under warranty?

Solution
I found power supply testing button, it is small, hidden from accidental touches, LOL, clever Dell.

This is your back view

You see small green light on picture, there is small hole next to it, button is right behind this hole, so you need to use something like a tiny screwdriver to gently push it. Don't break it.

Here is huge picture of your original power supply, look at the little light, you see button there?

Explanation of you diagnostic lights

A possible system board, power supply, or peripheral failure has occurred.

1. Power off computer, leaving the computer plugged in. Press and hold the power supply test button on the rear of the power supply unit. If the LED next to the switch illuminates, the problem may be with your system board.
2. If the LED next to the switch does not illuminate, disconnect all internal and external peripherals, and press and hold the power supply test button. If it illuminates, there could be a problem with a peripheral.
3. If the LED still does not illuminate, remove the PSU connections from the system board, then press and hold the power supply button. If it illuminates, there could be a problem with the system board.
4. If the LED still does not illuminate, the problem is probably with the power supply.

Check solutions 1-4 and report on each one, like this "1 this happened, 2 that happened" Do not quote the whole message for easier to read post.

Oddly enough, I don't have the test button on the back where I saw it should be on youtube... is there any other place I could find it?

I don't hear anything.

First of all, which form factor you have, Mini Tower, Desktop, Small Form Factor or Ultra Small Form Factor

So I can look at correct pictures

Next, you stated that you have lights 1 and 3 lit, and power button flashing amber, if this is correct.

Lights 1 and 3.

Memory modules are detected, but a memory configuration or compatibility error has occurred.

Have you upgraded memory prior to problem started, if not, turn off PC, unplug power cable, press and hold power button for 30 seconds, open side door, remove motherboard battery, prior to removing battery pay attention for polarity, keep battery off for 30 minutes, this will reset BIOS, when battery is off, press and hold power button for 30 sec again, when done, place battery back AND place only 1 memory module back in the slot closest to processor, connect everything necessary back and attempt to start and report.

Only if everything working fine, install the rest, one at the time (if you have 4 modules), boot up, working, turn off PC, install next module and so on, if you have 2 sticks only follow this

The colors on the ejector ears indicate pairs. They go in 1 THEN 3 then 2 then 4 not 1 2 3 4 So bank A then Bank B both SETS are matched pairs.

Can not find correct picture.

But first I need your FORM FACTOR, so I can check further.

I just realized that you have still Dell warranty - call them and rape them, when calling have your service code and service tag numbers ready!

I did not gave up, but Dell has all resources at their finger tips, and I need to do a lot of guess work....
