Story: My friend's Gigabyte mobo was faulty and the Repair Shop owner suggested him a Asrock mobo.

Since he is a DJ, his procedure is the usual: Video rendering, Audio Rendering, Image rendering. He also does gaming.

I can't find tests comparing the 2, and I hear that the Phenom II was a really great architecture. So I wonder if it's worth the upgrade, if it is, I would definitely ship him the FX-8350.
(Yes, I know that it is really is the Athlon II X4).

Budget? If he can cover just the board, then Phenom II X4. If he can cover more, then I'd jump ship and go for an Intel quad core if not the X99 platform. Depends how intense this rendering is that he's doing, the video rendering and gaming is going to be largely GPU dependent rather than CPU but all of it will benefit from a better CPU. The FX-8350 is a better CPU, but do not think it's comparable to an 8-core from Intel; it's not... the 6-core i7 parts for X99 will wipe the floor with it and do so with less energy being used resulting a quieter cheaper-to-run cooler machine.

ASRock is a very low budget brand for Motherboards, ASUS is the higher end model. Keep that in mind.

Phenom II is ancient, I would avoid it.
The FX-8350 is ok, but rather old. You could probably get a better price for an i5 at this point, and better performance.

I didn't pick the motherboard, he did, or the computer shop did for him.

I was talking about upgrading. I'm not going to buy a whole new mobo and Intel processor, that's more cost and shipping to Argentina, I just want to upgrade his CPU. If he was my brother or family, I would get him the new mobo regardless of price, and a Intel.

It take it that it's okay to upgrade, I'll send him the CPU.

I should have put that I wasn't here to be suggested a processor(Unless it's another AMD AM3+), just if my decision to select the FX was worth an upgrade over the Phenom II. I'm shipping it to Argentina, the tariff is half the price of the item, so that's paying 1.5 the price of the item, and I'm not going that far.

If the rendering is .5 seconds, then it's not worth it. If it's 40 seconds better, it's plausible.

Being Anti-Intel, I rather stick with AMD. Personal reasons, no matter how people see/judge me as for my choices. I don't care if the same AMD processor is 1/8 the speed of an Intel for the same price. Intel has done messed-up stuff to ever consider them. Only if it's a special reason, if my family members want it.
