It needs the bios update before it will work(post) with the cpu. If the board was manufactured after the bios release came out then it likely has a bios that supports the cpu. If it doesn't you either need to return the board, or buy a cheap cpu(celeron) that the board does support, update the bios then install the 4790k.

Do you have an old haswell(original sku)? If you do, you install that chip, update the bios, then install your 4790k. Otherwise, the bios had better be able to handle devil's canyon chips.
This webpage will tell you what bios you need for the newer haswell chips http://us.msi.com/support/mb/Z87-G45-GAMING.html#down-bios
Final option is use your other computer, set up a usb flash drive to install the newest bios to your new board.
Could also ask your computer nerd buddy, who has an original haswell, to borrow his chip.

For future replies to make things abit easier for you this website tells you what works and not http://processormatch.intel.com/MotherBoards/ByChipSetName?chipSetName=Z87 just hopped on there to make sure and says mine is compatible so thats music to my ears!
