I'd like to improve the performance of my AMD A10 6800k's system which includes 8GB 1600MHz ram and a Radeon R9 270x. I saw a thread similar -http://www.tomshardware.com/answers/id-1974180/advice-upgrading-amd-a10-6800k-based-system.html?56009c53885fa=reload - in which people have suggested faster ram.

I play games like Minecraft, Civ5 and Fifa and I have noticed when recording Minecraft the game is not smooth and the fps fluctuates.
Is getting faster ram going to improve performance or should I look at doing something else like getting an SSD?

People usually buy an AMD CPU because they can overclock it to improve its performance. First you may need a good aftermarket cooler because overclocking generates more heat. Then google "A10 6800k overclocking" and you'll find a lot of info; don't expect a significant performance increase because the CPU already runs at 4.1 GHz with a 4.4 GHz turbo speed and you don't have much overclocking headroom. Include your motherboard in the search criteria since not all motherboards are created equal. No matter how much it overclocks (4.5 GHz to 5.0 GHz if you're really really lucky), it still won't be as good as an Intel i3, but your initial goal most likely wasn't to use it as a gaming CPU.

You'd see an improvement that corresponds to the increase in frequency, e.g., from 4.0 to 4.5 GHz represents 12.5% from the CPU itself, but that doesn't necessarily guarantee that you'll always get a corresponding FPS improvement. The A10-6800K is borderline for GTA V and you originally bought it for light gaming, not to run GTA V. I read your other thread and you didn't even have a discrete GPU; therefore gaming never was the primary purpose of that system. http://www.game-debate.com/games/index.php?g_id=1308&game=Grand+Theft+Auto+V&p_make=AMD&p_deriv=APU+A10-6800K+Quad-Core&gc_make=ATI&gc_deriv=Radeon+R9+270X+MSI+Gaming+2GB+Edition&ram=8&checkSubmit=#systemRequirements An i5-4460 almost meets the recommendations: http://www.game-debate.com/games/index.php?g_id=1308&game=Grand+Theft+Auto+V&p_make=Intel&p_deriv=Core+i5-4460+3.2GHz&gc_make=ATI&gc_deriv=Radeon+R9+270X+MSI+Gaming+2GB+Edition&ram=8&checkSubmit=#systemRequirements
