I'm just wondering if these two wifi standards are compatible with each other. For example, can I use a wireless ac adapter on my laptop with an n router, and vice versa? Some sites that sell adapters only specify b/g/n but not ac. Any insight is appreciated. Thank you,

The newer standards are backwards compatible. You should be ok unless you get a specialized AC router that only operates at 5GHz.
For the most part, you can use a g/n adapter with an AC router. Likewise, you can use an AC adapter with any router.

Yes 801.11ac is backwards compatible. 802.11ac only supports the 5GHz frequency though - the good news about that is that there's far more room in that frequency spread than there is in the over-used 2.4GHz . The bad news is that a 5GHz signal has less range.
im running this setup currently and i can say there arent any problems with me im running the wireless card
