Hey guys! My system specs are as follows:
Intel i5 4410 3.1GHz
Kingston 4x2 RAM
Win 7 64bit
Gigabyte LGA 1150 mobo
Gpu AMD 6770 HD 1GB xfx
Psu VIP gold 500 watts

I am thinking of getting ASUS R7 370 2gb STRIX gpu, but not sure if my smps can handle it.
It is rated 500w max and has 1 6 pin connector.

Any and all help is appreciated!

Well, no need to spend $70 on a good-quality PSU when you can get both a good-quality AND affordable PSU. Here's my recommendation for a replacement:

Power Supply: XFX TS 550W 80+ Gold Certified ATX Power Supply ($44.99 @ NCIX...

Thank you!
But is it alright to run the card on that smps or it may cause some problem with the card?
Because if the smps can provide the wattage why would be a better psu needed?

When we talk about PSU/SMPS performance, the wattage is not only the factor usually considered. Factors such as reliability, efficiency, and safety are very important. This means looking at how the component was built, what parts where used, and how is the life-cycle/failure rate of that PSU compared to other available brands/models in the market.

You might want to check the Latest PSU Tier List where various power supply units were tested and categorized according to their quality. We want to select from either the Tier-1 or Tier-2 and avoid the other PSU's in the Tier-3 and below (as much as possible).

Thanks a lot for all the informative answers!
I am pooling some money together to buy Corsair VS 550w psu but it might take a while... :-(

I am feeling concerned mainly because it's a modified version of the AMD card from ASUS so it might change something or other...

I know VIP is not a reputed psu lol but iI have been using it for at least 3 years now with absolutely no qualms. So I figured I might as well run it as long as it goes :)

But.... Will their be any drastic damage if the psu malfunctions under load?

The worst thing that could happen if you're psu has active pfc is the psu going to die.
but if it doesn't have active pfc and other stuff the worst thing that could happen is kaboom.:)

Hmm I went through the psu tier list here and apparently Corsair VS line is at the 4th tier! That shouldn't be much surprise though because I am able to get it for less than 45 usd... :p

But yeah... It was not budget constraints that made me choose that one, rather the lack of knowledge. I can extend my budget upto 70 usd. (Lol I know! I don't have big budget...) I would greatly appreciate any suggestions raisonjohn! :)

Well, no need to spend $70 on a good-quality PSU when you can get both a good-quality AND affordable PSU. Here's my recommendation for a replacement:

PCPartPicker part list / Price breakdown by merchant

Power Supply: XFX TS 550W 80+ Gold Certified ATX Power Supply ($44.99 @ NCIX US)
Total: $44.99
Prices include shipping, taxes, and discounts when available

This Tier-2 550W 80+ Gold PSU would be enough for your R7 370. Should you decide to upgrade in the future for a GTX 970 or a GTX 980, this PSU can still power your rig. Note that the $44.99 is after a $30.00 rebate.

Here's another Tier-2 PSU with a lesser rebate ($5):

PCPartPicker part list / Price breakdown by merchant

Power Supply: SeaSonic S12II 520W 80+ Bronze Certified ATX Power Supply ($49.99 @ Newegg)
Total: $49.99
Prices include shipping, taxes, and discounts when available
Generated by PCPartPicker 2015-09-22 14:16 EDT-0400

This can also power your future GTX 970 or GTX 980 rig (should you choose to upgrade to those GPU's).
