Question My macbook using huge amounts of data.

My macbook 11' (running mavericks)is using hude amount of my internet data.It used up my 40 gb internet plan within days.I baught an extra 20gb yeaterday and only 2 gb is left.I had recently puchased a few apps(small ones) from itunes store.Why is this happening?What should I do?
Will updating solve my problem?

what apps? might have malware? it keep updating data?

@rgd1101 Just some pdf converter softwares(purchased from the appstore).Are there any other possibilities for this problem?

Hi

If you have insecure wireless networking some one may be downloading movies at the same time as you are using the system?

I don't think so. I do have secure wifi and i have used my internet for the past weeks without trouble (on other computers).
