Hi Guys,

I am setting up my new build which comprises of the following:

i5 4690K
GA-Z97-UD5H-BK
G.Skill Trident X 2x8GB
MSI GTX970 ME 4G

The issue, or more like a irritant for me is that the supplied drivers on the MoBo DVD seem to be at odds with supposedly latest version on the Gigabyte website.

The differences observed are as below:

Intel(R) HD Graphics Driver (Win7/W8 x64)
DVD: Version:10.18.14.4206 Size:337.52MB
Website: Intel VGA Driver 15.36.24.64.4264 116.75 MB 2015/09/16
(Are HD and VGA drivers different? Which one do I need? Should I install both?)

Realtek HD Audio Driver
DVD: Version:R3.97(7266) Size:587.76MB
Website: Realtek HD Audio Driver R3.94 216.93 MB 2014/07/01
(Website has lower version!!?? Which one should I install?)

Intel(R) Network Connections Software
This release includes software and drivers for Intel(R) PRO/100

DVD: Version:19.1 Size:149.65MB
Website: Intel LAN Driver 18.8 74.38 MB 2014/05/02
(Website has lower version!!?? Or are they different? Which one should I install?)

Bigfoot Networks Killer Network Manager (64)
DVD: Version:1.1.50.1309 Size:102.76MB
Website: 8.0.2.42 102.24 MB 2014/05/02
(Website seems to be higher version, but the version numbering seems to be very different. Which one to install?)
(Also, this Mobo has both Intel and Killer Ethernet. Should I install driver for any 1 or for both?)

Marvell GSATA AHCI Driver
DVD: Version:1.0.0.1062 Size:2.26MB
Website: Marvell SATA Controller Driver 1.0.0.1061 0.27 MB 2014/04/30
(Website has older version!!??)
Also there is Marvell® Storage Utility 4.1.0.2013 41.82 MB 2014/04/30 on website, but not on DVD. Should I install?)

I guess that is a long list of questions. Sorry about that. Any help in clearing these confusions will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
StillWaters

That is weird... (I could have checked the site myself, sorry I didn't)

I would recommend using what's on the website as opposed to the DVD, because if you encounter any issues the first step will be to get the ones at the site.

Also, if you are not going to use the integrated GPU (Intel HD 4600), which I'm assuming is the case as you have a GTX 970, then I'd recommend NOT installing the Intel GPU drivers as they can cause issues. Also worth mentioning don't let Windows auto-update install them either (you'll need to change your Win update settings).

As for your Intel and Killer Ethernet, if you are going to use both then install both. If not then there should be no issue in installing only the one you will use.

To your question about the Marvell Storage Utility I would say read this: http://forums.tweaktown.com/gigabyte/47587-what-marvell-storage-utility.html Hopefully that answers your questions.

One last thing to note (it may not matter as I didn't notice any differences by scanning quickly but...) when you are at the Gigabyte download/support page, make sure you are looking up the drivers/BIOS for your revision. The different revisions (1.2, 1.1, 1.0) are listed after the "title" GA-Z97X-UD5H rev... (to find what revision your board is it will be printed on the PCB itself).

P.S. Please let me know how this all goes as this is the Motherboard I want to replace my GA-Z87X-D3H with and I'm curious to see how it performs (review sites seem very eager to give everything good ratings these days)

Hi Dom_79,

I had raised a query at Gigabyte support also. Here is the respone I got:

Dear User,

We had tried to check the driver versions from driver DVD and our web site, basically web site contains the latest version but some file versions are not named the same.

For example,

1. Graphics driver: the driver named differently but the one on web site is newer.
2. Audio driver: the driver in 140AR driver DVD is the same version (R3.94) from our web site.
3. LAN driver: the driver in 140AR driver DVD is the same version (18.8) from our web site.
4. Bigfoot: the version is the same.
5. Marvell: the version is the same, the wording on web site was incorrect and we already correct it.
6. If you do not install Marvell RAID, you do not need to install this utility.

Regards,
GIGABYTE

I am being careful with installs as I absolutely hate bloatware. I have been using this board for about 10 days in an open bench setup and its working really well. One of the reasons I went for the Black edition was to reduce the possibility of a lemon as Gigabyte markets them as server level tested boards.

It looks good too with its black and gold color scheme.

Let me know if you want to know any specific detail about the boards run time performance and I'll try and get the answer for you.

Regards,
Still

I am glad you got some clarification from Gigabyte :) I am the same with bloatware to the point that I don't bother with the software DVDs that come with motherboards. I just D/L the drivers from the website to a flash drive before the install/setup.

As for specific details, I am looking for very particular info and I won't mind if you don't want to (or I understand if you don't have the hardware) to look into it :)

What I was looking for was:

1. Fully populated DIMM slots. My board (z87x-d3h) has known issues with all four DIMM being populated, a BIOS revision fixed the issue but I still have/had problems getting my RAM recognized and running at the XMP speed (1600MHz CL9) I was able to work around by manually OC'ing and adjusting all timings but the BIOS (and thus apps like CPU-Z) still recognize the RAM as PC3-10700 (667MHz) when they are in fact PC3 12800 (800MHz)

2. I run two GPUs not in SLI. I have found many "quirks" doing this on this board (d3h) such as apps and BIOS not being able to recognize the GPU properly - sometimes the secondary GPU was not recognized at all despite it still functioning! I was able to correct this issue by adding more voltage to the PCH (and more volts elsewhere) but that is something I'd like to avoid with the ud5h

3. I've got an odd issue with flash player apps where they are extremely laggy/choppy when I scroll the mouse anywhere but on the flash media (video). This may be due to anti-virus/firewall (although it doesn't happen on another system with the same AV/firewall prog.) And I have eliminated the mouse itself as the culprit. Right now it seems it may have to do with how my board (d3h) shares/plexes the PCIE lanes. So I'm hoping the ud5h has a different sharing/plexing profile.

I know that those are some pretty specific things and I wouldn't expect you to try any out if that's not how you are going to run your system. Thanks for the update and info about the board and I hope all goes well with your final build :)

Sorry for the long delay. Unfortunately I don't have the kind of setup to test and answer your queries. The board has been working well otherwise.
