Hello,

This is my first build so I am a newbie and have NO IDEA what is going on. My first build has been working for months now, however every once in a while, it stops working. When I press "power" on my case, the fans spin (including the CPU cooler) and everything powers up. The problem is there is no video output and my USB devices don't light up. Most times if I unplug and reboot, it starts working again, however this time that is not the case. I know there are many posts like this however, most don't suit my needs. Here are the parts if they're any help:

  • Asus TUF Sabertooth 990FX R2.0
AMD FX8320 Black Edition (stock cooler)
MSI GTX 970 gaming video card
    Seagate 250GB SSD
    WD Blue 1TB HDD
    Crucial Ballistix Sport 16GB
    Gigabyte GC-WB867DI WiFi+Bluetooth 4.0 Card
Thanks in advance for the help!

Thanks for the advice Tradesman, will try this soon. One question -- how do I download direct to hard drive if the computer doesn't have any video output?

However USB devices should not cause a core voltage failure like the OP is seeing, it still points to a critical failure in either the board or CPU.

Ok after further research I can confirm it's a common fault with this board, I would assume a VRM, controller or heatsink defect and the board should be RMA-ed.

Basically search google for "sabertooth red CPU" and the results will be filled with it.

So after doing a bit of research, I decided to clear my CMOS and my PC started working again. However, I left it on last night to download drivers and it went into hibernation mode. For some reason it wouldn't come out of this mode, so I unplugged it. When I tried to turn it back on, the CPU LED lit up again and didn't POST. I tried resetting the CMOS again, but no such luck. Any ideas?

It likely had a CPU power failure again and blacked out, not an actual hibernation unless you saw it do so.

Have you checked the warranty for the board? because it's highly likely fatally defective.

I am encountering this same problem as you after my last asus motherboard failed in the same exact manner. That one was about 6 years old so I understand. But This one was brand new and I'm experienceing the same problem: the system powers up and the shuts down before I can even get into BIOS to diagnose anything. I have an AMD FX 4350 (with stock cooler) that is new also but I think Its the motherboard that is failing. I am emailing ASUS right now and will update you when they respond.

If you've already gone through the basics of re-seating the CPU, checking each stick of RAM and each RAM slot individually and the CPU light still indicates a CPU issue then the board is DOA and needs an RMA.
