Hi. I am a female college student and know nothing about computers.
My hard drive was confirmed by apple to be completely dead beyond repair.
So I bought a new hard drive, and it did not seem to be working with my 2012 MacBook pro.
I looked at the box and it said it requires 6Gb/s and is backwards compatible to 3Gb/s.
I am wondering if my new hard drive is not working because I do not meet the requirements of the hard drive? If i upgrade my memory to 6GB, would it then work? thank you

Hi Amy, what the hard drive box is talking about is the drive is a SATA 3 drive with a peak transfer rate of 6GB/s and is backward compatible to SATA 2 which has a peak transfer speed of 3GB/s. It is not talking about your computer's memory...

3Gb/s and 6Gb/s are speeds for data access on the hard drive. It has nothing to do with RAM (memory). So no, upgrading your memory will not help.
Are you following a process to replace the hard drive? Did you try booting into recovery mode to re-install OSX?

I have done many hard drive replacements for MacBooks and it is a fairly easy process. Plenty of guides out there, try ifixit.com
If you are under warranty then take it to Apple else you are better off doing it yourself or finding a local repair person to help you, it will save you a lot of money.

It is not talking about your computer's memory. Apple can require certain brands and models to run with them. I would check with the local Apple re-seller and see if it's a compatibility issue.
