WD "My Passport": Retrieving "Deleted Files" which were never deleted...

Howdy y'all,

I have a WD "My Passport" external drive that I have installed on windows. I thought I was very prudent to have backed up all my computer's files onto the WD Passport, because only a few days later I spilled milk on the keyboard and knew I only had so long until the motherboard died. So I took the cpu into the Microsoft Store, had them look at it. I made one last final check to see if the files were on the drive, and set the drive to constantly transfer and update. To my knowledge, there was no activity (ie the transfer seemed to have finished) and the file sizes of the cpu's hard drive and the external drive matched at some 300 or so GBs.

So I now have a new cpu. It has Windows 10 on it instead of Windows 8 if that's important. I installed the WD software and plugged in the WD drive. Awesome! The files all seem to be there.

The problem is: now that I go to retrieve the data from the WD hard-drive, all of the files are crossed out. All of them show up, but for some inexplicable reason they are all considered to be "deleted files".

I'm beginning to doubt I can retrieve these files anymore. Help is of course appreciated!

First, try plugging that drive into another computer, WIN 10 has many issues. Depending on how you made your backup with the WD app, you may not have to install that software to see, or get your files.

Second, any decent recovery software should be able to help you with this, just make sure not to save the recovered files back to your external you are recovering from. You can sometimes try software to see if it will pick up your files before you buy it, and you have to buy it to save it (that's how it usually works).

Third, if the data is very important and you'd rather not chance losing the files, opt for a professional service. Some companies have affordable rates for deleted file recovery.

Wow, thanks, that was really quick!

It turns out that the files were going to a different folder than I had thought, so it appeared like they weren't going when they were

However, I now have a new problem, which I'm sure can't be an isolated incident, so hopefully there's a quick fix.

All of the files are transferred, but they all have "permissions" on them which forbid me to view them at all. This includes photos, pdfs, office files, everything. I don't know how I'm supposed to change the permissions when the original cpu is not available. Do you know how that works?

You can check the permissions on the folder first, make sure the read only and hidden boxes are unchecked. You can google for permissions utility that can probably change them for you in mass. There is one very useful app called Take Ownership which may help. Select the folder and then check the box for all subfolders and files. Then execute.
