Hi everyone! For some time now I was wondering weather or not a mechanical keyboard would improve my working and gaming experience. I get the fact that the tactile feedback is better then the one that membrane offer, however, I'm using a 3d modeling software that requires a lot of hot key presses (like ctrl+alt+shift+some other key combination). Correct me if I'm wrong but it seams like a flat, chiclet keyboard fits better for this kind if task (like Razer Deathstalker that I'm currently useing). I've never tried mechanical keyboards before but the membrane keyboards with long key travel distance I find uncomfortable for hotkeys. Can some one point me in the right direction? Thanks!

I purchased my first mechanical keyboard about 6 months ago and it is quite a lot different. Typing takes a bit of time to get used to because of the high key caps and because the actuation point is so small, on my old keyboard I might slightly press a key by accident when moving from key to key but it doesn't register but on a mechanical keyboard it does which can be annoying (K70 RBG Brown if you were wondering.)

They are better for gaming, they claimed performance improvement is arguably marginal unless your really obsessive about the game, and you could consider having one keyboard for gaming and one for 3d modelling. While the key does travel a fair distance it only has to travel half the distance to register. They are initially annoying to get used to but you do get used to it and personally I am happy I took the plunge.

I would definitely recommend a mechanical keyboard. Most of them have true n-key rollover which will help with multiple key presses. There are many type of swithches on mech. keyboard, but the most common type is cherry mx switches. There are different switches (with different colors corresponding to different preferences). I personaly think Cherry MX Brown are very good switches.

Thanks for the replies. I think that the blue switch would fit the best for me since I'd like a more pronounced feedback and don't relay care about the noise. I've read in a "Mechanical Keyboard Guide" article that you don't have to press the keys all the way down, which means that the long travel distance might not be a problem when you have to press something like "ctrl+shift+i" with one hand, without touching the "u" or "o" keys by accident.
