Along with ram frequencies the general rule of thumb is you want to have the same amount of ram and to make sure the cl timing and brand are the same. Mixing and matching ram can lead to some unexpected issues, like maybe it's a ddr3l stick you have and you're using ddr3 ram originally ddr3l would use less wattage.

The memory module will try it's best to cope, but you're just putting unnecessary strain on something that is probably not going to be stable.

But theirs no harm in trying. Just make sure you put the ram in the right slots if it's two dimms or sticks of ram. And you have 4 slots. Put them on the same color so basically skip one between the two. If it still doesn't run reset the cmos.

As long as the motherboard supports both memory modules it should be fine. Try to use identical RAM modules (with similar frequency and latency) and run in Dual channel mode (use both rams on identical DIMM color). For example DIMM 0 and 3.

If the RAM frequency isn't the same, your system will run at the frequency of the slowest RAM module but possible BSOD is expected to happen.
