I'm aware my motherboard is fairly old and outdated but I don't really have the money to buy a new one ( This would cause me to need other parts ) . I'm simply looking for an upgrade to my current CPU ( which is also fairly old ) that is compatible with my motherboard as I don't really know the best places to look. I don't mean to be rude but sending me a list with CPUs isn't going to help me much as I don't really understand a lot of it, sorry!

Motherboard - ASRock K10N78
Current CPU - AMD Phenom 8450 2.1ghz

Solution
If yo dont want to get a new mobo and RAM, then go with the CPU we suggested. Its a very good chip ad you should be able to achieve excellent overclocking with a good cooler. :)

According to Asrock, this board is AM3 "ready", meaning it will take a AM3 chip up to 140w, so I would say the Phenom II x6 1100T. Now that said, I do not know if you will need a bios update, or if that chip is truly compatible with that board, but if it was it would be a massive upgrade, that's still a decent chip.

More than likely yes, but there is still a chance you may need to update the bios

If its 2.0 in info looks like is fine, that you will know when you put cpu and have some problems dont boot thinks like that freeze or something else then you will update bios if it's working everything normal you will leave it like that

Isn't the CPU people are recommending AM3?

For AMD, that is currently the best CPU socket type around at the moment. I personally would favor Intel because their products deliver better performance at only a slightly higher price. However, if you don't have the money for those then definitely stick with AM3/AM3+ or if that is still too high, FM2/FM2+.
