Hi guys,

i plan to build a new rig. mainly for 3D RENDERING, DYNAMIC and PARTICLE SIMULATION etc. (and NOT for heavy gaming).

should i go for i5 4960- gtx 970 or i7 4790- gtx 970. i see there is not much difference between both the processors on paper. and gtx 980 seems to be a bit COSTLY. Which pair is better value for money to get the work done (this will be my rig for next 3 years)

any other options also will be helpful :)

Solution
Only the K versions can overclock. It is not really worth the money unless you have the extra cash to spend. If you want to OC go with the K version and get a Z97 motherboard.

Or he can try Intel Xeon E3-1231 V3 for his purpose.

Did some research on xeon E3-1231 v3 and found out i7 4790 performs slightly better than it. and it costs $66 more than xeon in my place. is it worth for those extra money?? ( i may overclock )

I have the xeon. Its basically a i7 4770. if you are not getting a k series i7 then the xeon is worth it. The xeon is not a good overclocker. Truth is you could easily spend an extra $100 on an i7 k series and z based board, but you will be better off sending the extra $100 on a gpu.

Or why dont you try:

xeon cpu
z97 motherboard
DDR3 2400 RAM.
This is what i'm running myself
It will still be cheaper ( (think) than an an i7 4790 with a h97 and DDR3 1600ram. It was for me based in the UK

Even so, a non k series i7 4790 is only marginally faster (2-3%) than the xeon or i7 4770. So unless he gets the k series, and overclocks it to the inch of its life, its not worth the $66 extra. He will basically be paying Intel an extra $66 for the i7 badge.

DDR3 2400 and a better gpu will make up the difference. Plus 2% is not alot. 2% of a 60 minute render = 90 seconds or less. So unless his renders take 10 hours, it really isn't alot.

I agree unless he overclocks it, the xeon givens the best bang for your buck performance.

Anyway, won't a AMD R9 390 (not the x version) be better for rendering because it has more RAM and render output processors?

It cost the sames as a 970 gtx

Thank you for the suggestions. :) decided to go with i7-4790K. considering its overclocking ability. so that i wont regret the extra $66 if i need to overclock it. or else i have to change the whole processor later.

This doesn't make too much sense to me but i7 and 970 would work better.

I personally would advise the Xeon 1241 as it has a slightly higher clockspeed therefore bridging the gap between the stock clock 4790 and 1231.

Alternitively you could run with this:
