Mobo won't even get to POST

I reached a dead end.

Yesterday I attempted to build a computer for my mom. Here are the specs:

CPU: Intel i3-4170 (new)
Mobo: ASUS B85M-G (old)
RAM: 1x4GB Kingston 1333MHz (new)
PSU: Sentey BRP 600W (old)

As you can see, the only thing I bought were the CPU and the RAM. The old build she had, was already working with that PSU, and I used to have that Mobo on my main build, so I can guarantee you that two months ago, it was working.
I installed everything, plugged in everything, started the computer, CPU fan went on, and nothing. Just a black screen. Won't even get to POST.
Naturally, I tried to narrow down the problem. I plugged in a case speaker, disconnected the HDD and started the computer. No beep. After that, I removed the RAM. That definitely had to beep.
No beep.
I cleared CMOS.
No beep.
I followed the checklist posted here and the extended one.
No beep.
I did recall though, that when I installed the CPU, one of the pins on the socket was a bit bent, so I took the CPU off and tried to put it back to where it belonged with a needle. It looked fine to me after that, so I started everything again, and still the same results.
The PSU was working until yesterday, so I'm definitely sure it's not that, and it's not the RAM, clearly. Either CPU or mobo.
I'm 80% sure it's the mobo, but I'd like to ask you guys first what do you think. Yes, everything's plugged in correctly. My guess is that when I took off my old motherboard and kept it on its box, something may have gone south and that's why it's not working. Also, it could be the bent pin, but at this point, I don't really know anymore. I don't know what else to try. There's a slight change that's the CPU but other than trying it on my own build, I cannot really know.

Any suggestions?

Frankly that's a tough nut to crack without a spare, compatible cpu or motherboard. The couple of things i can think of that might help narrow it down from 50-50 are:

Did you connect the 4/8 pin cpu power cable?
Take high resolution images of both the cpu and motherboard and inspect the cpu socket pins.
see if any thermal paste got on there.

4/8 pin CPU power cable is connected; otherwise, it wouldn't even turn on.
As for the socket pins, that's what I was thinking on doing before trying the CPU on my computer to see if it works. Any possibility that a faulty CPU may fry other components?

Dumb question but, wouldn't the i3 CPU have a driver problem or anything with the mother on my built which has an i5 (they're both haswell)?

What motherboard are you using? It wouldn't hurt to check that the i3 cpu doesn't need a bios update. But I don't think you'll have any problems. You only want to see if it POSTs so disconnect all hard drives.

ASUS H97-PRO GAMER

I'm gonna try the i3 on that mobo tomorrow. If it doesn't work, I'll RMA it. Otherwise, I'll get an H81 on the weekend and that should do the thing... Hopefully

How do you know I need that version? I'm running 2206 at the moment on the H97... Does that mean that that could be the problem on the B85?

Yes it could. The req bios version is stated on the asus website under cpu support. Sorry I missed it but seems the b85 needs at least bios version 2301.

Which cpu did you use before on the b85? Thats the key to performing bios update. Additionally if your H97's cpu needs a lower bios version (check link above) it might be worth switching just to update the bios.

I had and still have an i5-4570, which apparently works from BIOS 0308 on the H97 and 0306 on the B85...

I'm curious now... Shouldn't the mobo at least POST if the CPU is not compatible and then just get stuck at BIOS?

If the problem I'm having is because of the BIOS version, then I'd have to install the i5 on the old mobo to get into BIOS then update it through easy flash... And voilá?

I'll try that on friday and update the thread with the results. Thank you!

As promised, here's my update:

Put my i5-4570 on my mom's build; computer started. So mobo wasn't faulty after all. Updated the BIOS to the latest version on ASUS website, and proceeded to put the i3 inside again...

No POST.

Conclusion: CPU is faulty. I'm gonna RMA it tomorrow.

I'm so mad at the store that sold it to me.

I'll update the thread tomorrow or as soon as I get the replacement for the CPU.

Thank you all for your answers

Final update:

Went to the store yesterday, they tried the CPU on a different mobo, and turns out it did work. So the problem was the mobo. I took it to the store, and they tried it out with a different CPU as well, and it worked. We tried narrowing down the problem, but I had already tried everything.
My only conclusion is that the bent pins were affecting that processor in particular, because other processors would work perfectly. So it was either getting a new mobo or a different CPU.
Ended up getting an i5-4440 for a few extra bucks and everything is working perfectly by now.

Thanks for everyone who took the time to reply on this thread :)
