I have been trying to get diablo 2 to work on my windows xp dell dimension 8200 all day. I have played it on it before with no problems. But since i have a new hard drive. I updated the video drivers downloaded directx 9.0. But it keeps crashing on the loading screen after i select my character. It also takes a few minutes to load after i click select character for some reason. Heres some more things i have tried starting it in administrator mode disabling startup applications completing the video test. But it keeps crashing on the loading screen with the guy in robes after i select my character. I also can still here music when it stops loading

I have to ask... did you moved your saves from early version of the game?
It might be that your character is corrupted or different version. Another possible cause is if you cheated it. If its newly created character that crashes the game then idk... maybe you will have to update game
I personally never had issues running the game even on windows 8
