Please help overclocking FX 6300

Hello all

sumary:
auto OC + slight change in multiplier = fine
manual evrything = HOT


(question in bold)
I am overclocking my cpu and i am very confused. So firstly i wast told not to overclock on this mobo because unstable VRM issue (msi 970 g46), but i did anyway, although i went with the OC ginie mode wich did it for me. i went from 3.5 to 3.9. about a year later i decided i want 4.0. so i looked up a tutorial on how to do it. i had to chance the voltages etc just to establish a baseline. and when i put my cpu under load my temperatures go 60+ but when i use auto oc, and just change the multiplier to 18 my temperatures are great. with both auto and manual my target (4.0). i could probably go higher but il do that another time. manual settings obtained here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bZPy6xMhtso

could someone please explain ?

cpu: FX 6300 black edition
mobo MSI 970A G46
cooler : coolermaster V8

To start with, you'll never notice ANY appreciable difference between 3.9 and 4Ghz. So if it's ok at 3.9, I'd leave it there and call it a day.

Secondly, the automatic methods are designed to keep the voltage somewhat higher, for stability, so the average user doesn't barf their system, but it also aggressively reduces the multiplier and voltage when it's not under load. This may be why it's not hot. It could also be that the system is actually being throttled due to high voltage or temps using the automatic method, and using the manual method it's only getting hot enough to notice, but not hot enough to throttle and thus actually be cooler (But also running at a much lower clock speed).

You definitely have a cooler that's more than...

You definitely have a cooler that's more than capable of keeping that chip cool, but the throttling and thus the downclocking is more likely to be a result of VRM heat than CPU core heat on that motherboard.


NOTE3: G46 and EXTREME4 are known to have overheated VRMs with 125W CPUs, so do not expect high OC with FX6 on these boards. MSI 970 GAMING and Gigabyte 970a-UD3P are a much better option in this regard.

You should absolutely NOT be overclocking on that board. If you want to overclock, you need a better motherboard.

Thanks. Would it possibly be my thermal paste. im using some cheap Chinese paste...... so i think what il do is just leave it as it is (4 ghz auto) untill i get a new board.(maybe in a few months try go up to 4.2 auto) but other than that just play it safe. I did try run a benchmark after the 3.9 auto and my score improved.(sorry for late reply)

Thanks man. decided to go manual(4.1), my temps are manageable, i think i had the voltage a bit high, but they still higher than auto. Thanks anyway!
