Formatting hard-drive to FAT32 (to backup PS3)

Hi,

I need to format my external 1TB hard-drive to FAT32 so I can backup my PS3 data before installing a new hard-drive.

I've searched Google and unfortunately there seems to be no "go to" utility to do this. Everywhere I look everyone suggests using a different utility and I end up not knowing what is good or even safe to use/download. Help would be much appreciated.

FAT32 is not available for large drives. I even tried doing it through command prompt and it stopped part way through and said that it couldn't do that size.

No, it's 1TB. I didn't really want to mess around making partitions. I was hoping there was a safe, reliable utility with a good reputation that someone has used and can confirm it is safe and works.

Using 3rd party tool will make the same thing. For FAT32 max volume size is 32GB so even if you use the tool it will create one partition of that size formated.
If this external drive is empty then i would just use windows tool, delete current partition and create 2 new.
One primary FAT32 32GB and secondary the rest of the space with NTFS.
If the one is filled already then you can still try to resize it and add the next partition with the space left, but windows is bad with resizing, probably some 3rd party tool would make it better.

If you don't like windows disk management then there is gparted which will do it probably even easier:

But you need a liveCD for that.

If you want to do it under windows then there is EaseUS Partition Master or Acronis Disk Director. Both will also do the job.

From what I've read, the 32GB limit is Windows imposed. While you still cannot add single files over a certain size, it should (according to the article I read) be possible to reformat a drive of 1TB to FAT32.
