hdd image backup

Hi,

I have an issue when i want to make a backup, if i choose to make an image, of my hdd-which is 500gb, does the file which is created (the image) occupy the same space, meaning 500gb???
or is it a smaller file???

depends what they mean

some people say "i want to back up my drive" but actually mean just stuff like photos/music/documents etc

an image will be an exact copy of the drive as it is now including windows--usually used for disaster recovery
