So I have connected up an old IDE DVD drive to my computer using a IDE/SATA data convertor. The bios recognises it and I am able to boot from CDs.

However, when I get into Windows I have no DVD drive and I mysteriously have a floppy drive which is strange since I don't have one connected.

I have also connected an old IDE hard drive using a converter as well. This appears in windows.

What do I do to get the DVD drive to show in Windows?

Two different issues:
1. the phantom floppy drive is something XP sees from the bios settings. Change your bios setting for your floppy drive to none, and it should go away.

2. The DVD drive is probably missing because of an IDE controller driver issue. If it is hooked to the chipset IDE controller, install the Intel chipset INF update utility. You'll have to search for it. I don't even know if Intel has it on their site anymore since XP is no longer supported by MS. If it is hooked to a different controller, you'll have to find the controller drivers yourself.

Thanks for the help. I got it working by switching the cables around in the machine. I had three IDE devices, two connected using the IDE to SATA adapter, one connected using an IDE cable (I had one IDE port on my mobo and the rest sata). I made it so the DVD drive was connected using IDE instead of using the sata to IDE connector.
