Hey there everyone. I've currently got (2x4) of G.Skill Sniper Series in my PC. My good friend is willing to give me (2x8) of Kingston HyperX. Could I possibly keep them both and run 24gb of memory? I understand that that is overkill and all that but I just wonder if it'll work. My mobo is rated up to 32gb. Thank you!

Solution
Yes it should work but as mentioned you may run into issues based on the speed of the memory and timings. Due to the mixed nature you also should try any crazy overclock with them as it will increase the chance for instability. Lastly you may run into problems that the ram or the board just doesn't want to work with mixed sets. This some times happens even if they are of the same brand which is why they sell them in kits. I have personally never had this problem so your results will vary but I feel it's safe to give it a try and if it turns out your system isn't stable just remove the two 4GB sticks and stick with the 8's.

If they have different capacity chips or different numbers of chips, then the chances of compatibility will drop sharply. Different voltages makes it even less likely and the list goes on with timings. Frequencies too as zAustin pointed out. Even worse, two kits can work on one motherboard, yet not work on another motherboard.

However, there is no risk in mixing the kits to test it out. RAM is finicky and might work or not work for no apparent reason, so testing them together is the only way to know if it will work. Give it a try. If it works, great, and if not, then no harm done in trying.
