I had a wonderful Gateway laptop (approx. 5 yrs old) that ran Win7 flawlessly. Sadly, the display screen crapped out without any notice. Geek Squad advised that it was time for a new machine. They gave me the HD from the Gateway, and I bought a SATA cable along with a new Toshiba Satellite laptop with Win 8.1 installed.

My problem is that Win8.1 does not support POP3 email, so I have lost my entire Contact list and Calendar functionality from Windows Live Mail. I've tried to import, but no files show up that match the criteria sought.

Is there any way I can recover this info and build a new contact list?

Alternately, can I somehow redirect the boot instructions and run Win7 on the new machine off the old HD?? Thanks

If you have a Microsoft or Google email account, you can upload your contact list there and just connect to it to see everything.

Windows 8.1 supports POP3 just fine, it's the Mail app that doesn't. If you have office, you can use Outlook, or if you need a free option Mozilla still offers Thunderbird.

As for running windows installed on a different system on a new one, it's likely to not work from driver conflicts and OEM license restrictions.

Thanks for the reply. My edition of Office (Home/Student) did not come with Outlook. What I'm looking for is to locate my old contact list on the old HDD, and create a .csv file to import into either my ISP's mail app or the mail app within Win 8.1. Appreciate your input, thanks again

The old mail system used vcards rather than plain CSV, so you'll have to search for those. Modern address management works differently than you are used to, and it's highly recommended that you use a cloud based address system from google or microsoft to make it easier to back up and transfer addresses and other important information (birthdays, addresses, etc). Either of those two (and any imap or exchange system in general) can be added to the Win 8.1 app and it will be able to populate the calendar and people apps at the same time.

Thanks again for your input. I downloaded a fresh copy of Win Live Mail, and got it working. I was also able to locate my "custom" email folders on the old HDD. I imported them into the new WLM and they showed up in "Storage Folders/Imported Files". If only I could find the calendar data and contact list. OH well....thanks again for your help!
