I've just finished building a new computer, initial windows 8.1 install goes smoothly and the computer restarts however upon entering the personalise section of the install (pick your colours, connect to the wifi etc) the whole system will freeze and force me to restart. Occasionally it will also go to a blue screen of death with the error CLOCK_WATCHDOG_ERROR whereupon it will state it is retrieving information and remain on 0% after 10 minutes.
I've spent so long trying to buy these parts and it's just so disappointing that after finally finishing I can't install windows of all things.

Specs:
Mobo:Gigabyte z97p-D3
CPU: Intel i5 4690k
GPU: Zotac GTX 970
PSU: Corsair CX600
Network Adapter: TP-LINK TL-WN851ND 300Mbps Wireless N PCI Adapter
Hard Drive: Hynix 256GB SSD
Case: CoolerMaster 430 Elite Red

Solution
Well now it sounds like a bad motherboard or even driver issues for the board chipset. So, BIOS now sees this previous "ghost" hard drive (connected to the motherboard?) Now there's a problem when connecting ethernet cable to the network interface (built into the motherboard.) And now the buttons on the front (connected to a header on the motherboard) aren't working? Do you have the disc of drivers that came with your motherboard? hmmm.... go through this checklist here...

I would question the hard drive here...something is keeping data from being stored. Is there an AHCI configuration setting in CMOS? Do you have another drive to attempt the install on - even a platter drive will do just to test?

I've actually managed to install Windows 8.1 now and have narrowed the problem down to the network adapter. As soon as this is plugged in, the computer will simply freeze after the windows screen and render it unusable. Interestingly it also prohibits the front buttons on the case itself to work forcing me to switch off the power supply.
I have no way of actually accessing the internet on that computer however have this laptop if that helps.
Thanks for the quick response :)
