I'm trying to connect a WinXP hard drive to a Windows 8 computer so I can get at my files. I've tried using a USB to IDE/SATA cable adapter on a Win7 it works fine, but it won't work on win8. I can not see it in the disk management, th PC does not feel any thing. can any body help?

Hey there, Ahmed.

Is this a SATA or and IDE drive? If it's a SATA drive, you could try connecting it to your Windows 8 computer via a standard SATA connection, to see if the same thing happens again. Different drivers could prevent the HDD to be recognized by Windows 8, I'm talking about the SATA/IDE to USB adapter's drivers. You could try to uninstall the device from Device Manager and reconnect the drive, to see if it's recognized after that, or try updating the drivers. You could also try it out with different USB ports. Have you checked if the drive shows up in Disk Management? If you haven't done that already, please check and post a screenshot of what you see in Disk Management.

Hope that helps. Please let me know how everything goes.

Thank you Boogieman for your concerns,
My WD SATA external HD is out from my old Laptop, Disk Management doen not see it. I tried to connect my external SATA HAD to another Laptop running windows 7 and it works just fine. I have usb 2.0 and 3.0 ports and they both works fine.

I understand. Is the Windows 8 computer a laptop as well, or is it a desktop computer? I'm asking because if it's a desktop computer you'd probably have the option to try the HDD with a SATA connection (by connecting it directly with a SATA power and data cables to the motherboard). If you can't do that try updating the SATA/IDE to USB adapter's drivers from Device Manager. And it might be helpful to post a screenshot of the Windows 8 computer's Disk Management with the drive connected. Here's how to access Disk Management: How to access Disk Management in Windows to manage hard drives. You could also try to update the USB drivers of that computer, to see if anything changes.

if you have any suggestion for drivers update (if you know a site that I can get drivers update), but I have to tell you that I can not also see my HD on the device manager.

Well it all points out to some sort of incompatibility issue with the OS. I don't know a particular website for the drivers, perhaps the adapter manufacturer's website might have drivers released for that device. Does the SATA to USB adapter appear as a device in Device Manager when there's no drive connected to it? Also, do you have the option of trying a different HDD, to see if it works properly when connected via the same SATA to USB adapter, to your Windows 8.1 computer?
