Hi, this morning I connected my phone (HTC Desire) to the laptop ( with Windows 7) via bluetooth in order to transfer a photo. Photo was successfully transfered, however all files on the desktop except for program shortcuts (vlc, iTunes etc) were missing - mp3s, pictures, Word/Excel files....everything is gone. Have tried restoring system, antivirus, showing hidden files/folders - nothing. Anyone got any idea how i can get my files back?! :/

Solution
Were they shortcuts too, or were they the actual folders & files? If they were only shortcuts, look in the relevant parent folders (Music, Documents etc) under your account name.

Strictly speaking, you shouldn't place your own files & folders directly on the Desktop (if that's what you did).
Shortcuts are okay there, but not the actual folders & files.

In any event, you should always keep your data backed up somewhere!

Other options:

1. Use a Windows search tool (eg Agent Ransack) to find all MP3 files, JPG files etc: https://www.mythicsoft.com/agentransack
(don't use Windows own search tool, it's slow & clunky).

2. Use file recovery software (eg Recuva): https://www.piriform.com/recuva

Hi, thanks for the answer! They were actual files and folders (yeah, I know, I shouldn't have kept them there, especially with no backup...). The shortcuts are the only thing that's still there - everything else is gone. I will use these 2 options tonight when I get home - much appreciated! Will write in here in case it works, fingers crossed.
