Hello,

I need to get a UPS cause the power is going wack at my area. My tottal consumption according to http://powersupplycalculator.net/ is 330W + 50W of peripherals. I dont wanna break the bank or get the latest and most expensive. More a guide to understand how UPS' work in order to then make my market search for what suits me...

P.S. not sure if relevant, but my PSU is 750W...

what sort of runtime were you looking at?

is your system generally under heavy load or not?

psu size is irrelevant - what matters is how much load you actually use. even the rating psucalcs give you is not entirely accurate as most of the time you are under this (depending on how you ran the calc).

if you're running closer to 400w total (system is under heavy load constantly), you would want anywhere from a 1000va to 1300va unit which would give 9-14 minutes of backup. if you're running closer to 300w (average load) 14-21 for the same equipment. if you're running mostly at idle you'rel ikely to get 24-33 on the same equipment. generally i always suggest planning for full load as if you plan for minimum load you're going to be screwed if the power goes out when under full load.

i have the xs1300 from apc myself (1300va/780w) with a bit more loading than you have so i only get about 6-12 minutes of runtime but it does what i need it to do - allow me to close files and turn off the computer safely.
