Hello

I was looking at a computer for a friend, the computer has been running fine for a few months then suddenly it stopped displaying through the graphics card, the on-board graphics is fine so i have used this for investigating the issue. basically:

1. Graphics card does not get displayed in Device Manager
2. Ge-force (experience or other ge-force software) does not pick up the graphics card.
3. Could not find any events in event log showing a fault with the operation.
4. I have changed PCI ports with no success
5. I have put the graphics card in my computer (my computer picked up the graphics card and ran fine)
6. I have put another graphics card that works into the computer and again no display
7. Ran different virus scans, alot was picked up but nothing serious.
8. Ram sticks were picked up fine, Cant see how its is the power supply if the power worked for a few months. hard drive seems to be working fine, no extra attachments have been put on the computer
9. booting in safemode brings out the same out come.

This lead me to believe that there was a problem with the Motherboard PCI ports as the graphics card worked fine on my computer, other working graphics card never worked on the computer with a fault, and as it boots and runs fine with the on-board graphics i cant think of anything else that could cause this.

So i advised they got a new motherboard as i couldn't prove it to be anything else i thought this was the most logical choice, the motherboard has arrived, and they have plugged everything in and they have gotten it to boot up. but they have informed that they are experiencing the same problem, I can think of a reason why the graphics card is not getting picked up, can anyone think of anything else I can try when i get this computer back?

Of course I will double check all connections once i have received the computer but any further testing advice will be very much appreciated.

Thanks

Could be your monitor? Or maybe the cord you're using is bad?

Try this. Install ddu and select nvidia. Then select clean and shutdown (for new graphics card). Take the gpu out of the pci slot and make sure it's clean. Place it back in and boot the pc. Go to nvidia's website and make sure you download a fresh set of the latest drivers available. Then install. Should be working now.

thanks for the replies. I thought that it could be the monitor as well but if it was then why would it work with the on-board socket and fail on the graphics card? - I have also tested this on 2 different monitors that work fine with different computers.
when i went into the motherboard bios, it had a section where it detected what was picked up in each port, even tho the graphics card was plugged in on the PCI port it did not pick anything up, it picked up the ram sticks, CPU Hard drive ect fine.

I will try using the DDU and uninstall all graphics drivers and see how that goes once it boots back up, thanks for the advice,
If anyone else has any other ideas of what i can try please do say. again. much appreciated.

Thanks

Which models of motherboards are we talking about (original and new)? Did you replace the motherboard with an identical model? Some motherboard BIOS have an option to manually select onboard or PCIe graphics. If "onboard" or "iGPU" is selected it might override the PCIe card. Check the UEFI/BIOS and see if there is such a setting and, if it's there, set it properly.

Hello The old and new motherboard are the same types.
Computer specs:
Motherboard-: Z87 GD65 GAMING
CPU:- Intel i7-477OK - 3.50GHZ
Ram:- Corsair 2 4 gb sticks

Ive run the DDU and sadly no results,
I cannot see an section on the motherboard where you manually select onboard or PCIe Graphics,
but even if i could am not sure that would work as the motherboards not picking up the graphics card at all.
I will try the graphics card on my pc again today but i have a feeling this will still work fine
as also mentioned it could be the monitor, I have tested this with a few different monitors.

any other ideas will be greatly appreciated!

Hello,
Full update on what I have tested now.

I have put my Graphics card gtx 970 into the computer in question, same result as it had with the other graphics card.
I have put the other graphics card into my pc, (gtx 770 i think it was) and it run fine.
I have used my own power supply on the other pc and got the same result with the graphics card not working.
I have run the DDU which never worked.

Everything is point back at the motherboard, but this is a new motherboard which makes the chances of that being the problem slim... anyone else got any ideas?

thanks

It should be the motherboard, even if the chances are slim. I recieved two gtx cards that were faulty one after another(they claimed it's a new one but still it's dead).

Thanks imrazor and Anothony Chu, I have updated the BIOS and sadly this made no difference, have advised my friend to return the motherboard and get a different make as everything i test is pointing to a faulty motherboard.

thanks everyone for your help
