I want to upgrade from a i3 to a second generation 2.3 (or faster) Ghz Core i5 since my motherboard will support this and I do not have the financial resources to change out the motherboard and cpu and possibly the RAM. My problem is I do not know the model numbers for a 2nd gen i5 desktop cpu or where to find them.

Can anyone help me, please?

You should be aware that in order to overclock a "k" model Intel CPU, your motherboard must be able to overclock (OC) the CPU. Otherwise there will be no difference between getting an i5-2500 and i5-2500k CPU.

You need to provide the make and model # of the motherboard so that people can check if it does allow you to OC the i5-2500k. If you have a brand name PC like Dell or HP, then it will not have any OC options.

i5-2300, 2400, 2500, 2500k you can get them on ebay, craigslist (sometimes), amazon....... i bought an older acer predator that had a bad power supply for $60 2 weeks ago that had an i5-2300 in it......swapped the PSU and it works great.

Thank you for your reply.

I would not want a used CPU because you really don't know if it has been fried and usually the only place you get used ones is on places like ebay where there is basically no guarantee and you can get burned.

What is the difference between the 2500 or 2500K?

The 2500k has an unlocked multiplier, which makes it easier to overclock the processor.

anything i5-2xxx is 2nd gen......the best you will find is refurbished. there are no new 2nd gen processors being made. get one from a reputable seller on ebay or amazon. 2nd gen i5's can still be pricey even if used because they still play modern games very well. i have seen a used 2500k go for $200+ when for 235 you can get an i5-4460 and a motherboard as long as the ram you have is ddr3 1066mhz or higher it will be ok. so if you have 235 get this. http://pcpartpicker.com/p/nzHRnQ
